Recording yourself

Well I've had the following experiences:

-Whenever I listen to music on my Sony MD I've had people come up to and ask what I am using. When I tell them what it is, they usually respond: "Oh yeah, heard of that. Its kind of old, nobody uses it here".

Or...

-I went to an electronics shop that sold discmans, ipods, headphones, stereos etc...I asked for MD accesories and they said "Mini...what?" and recommended a store that deals specifically only Sony products.

Maybe it's been bad luck but having talked to a producer friend of mine from New York, he also thought the format did not catch on as much as it did in Europe. Maybe there's also a difference between Canada and the US?

MiniDisc never really caught on because it became easy to record straight to hard disk and burn CDs and DVDs etc. MiniDisc recording is ideal for what we're talking about here, but the mainstream consumer's needs are better served by other technology that is both more full featured and more affordable. When I bought my MiniDisc recorder about 10 years ago it was almost $400. Yikes!

can you use the minidisc recorder as just a stand-alone recorder to just record raw drums? i dont have any pa equip or mics, ive always had other people do that in the past.

Yes, all you need is a microphone. There are really good little stereo mics that Sony and other make that will work well. It needs a mini (1/8") stereo plug.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Agreed. Unless you are being picky, I would say an MD mic would be fine for recording yourself. The sound may not be perfect, but good enough for you to hear all drums and make a good evaluation.

I was just reading about this subject myself. From what little I've read these are suppose to be pretty good, though they are somewhat pricey.
